$50 M&T Bank Checking Bonus

M&T Bank is offering a $50 cash bonus to customers who open a checking account with direct deposit. Check below for more details:

(source M&T Bank promo page)

1. One cash bonus per personal checking account for activating direct deposit within 90 days of account opening or for making an initial deposit to your account via ACH transaction during the online account opening process. Bonus will be credited to the account after the first such deposit is made and will be reported as income for tax purposes. Bonus offer is limited to one per customer, may vary by product and region, is subject to change at any time in our sole discretion without notice, and is not available to employees of M&T Bank or any of its affiliates.

2. M&T Web Bill pay is free if the account you designate as your M&T Web Bill Pay billing account is (1) a Power Checking, M&T Select, M&T Direct Checking, M&T Classic Checking With Interest, M&T @ Work Checking, @College Checking or M&T Portfolio Management Account, (2) any checking account opened through our online application, or (3) any checking account opened in M&T Bank's Finger Lakes, Greater Baltimore or Greater Washington areas.

3. Only Visa check cards issued to residents of the United States and in good standing may be eligible to participate in Visa Extras. Additional exclusions of cards may apply. Points will only be earned on any signature-based purchase, Internet purchase, phone or mail order purchase, or automatic bill payment made with an enrolled Visa card and processed through the Visa USA Inc. network. Do not use PIN when paying for purchases with your enrolled card if you want to earn points.

This bonus used to be $100, but has subsequently been lowered to $25 to $50, depending on which account you open at M&T Bank. M&T Select® Checking With Interest and Power Checking are the only accounts which are eligible for the $50 bonus; the rest are eligible only for a $25 bonus. The former have requirements of holding an average daily balance of $5,000 to $50,000, otherwise monthly charges could apply.

It would be relatively easy to open M&T Totally Free Checking and get only $25, but not be subject to any fees.

After Provident Bank was purchased by M&T last year, my checking account was converted to a "Totally Free" checking account. I received a letter stating this had occurred, but the monthly statements stopped.

On February 19, 2010, I received a statement saying that my balance was $0.00. All the money in the account had disappeared! When I called M&T, 800-724-2440, I was told that after 60 days of no activity, the "Totally Free" account becomes a "Worry Free" account, which charges $8.00 a month. Again, no statements were sent out, and I received no letter, since this is an automatic "feature" of "Totally Free" checking.

The branch manager at my M&T branch is now "looking for a solution."
